AI & DEMAND FORECASTING WORKSHOP (GOLD PACKAGE/IBF MEMBERS ONLY)

This hands-on workshop cuts through AI hype to focus on the machine learning techniques that power modern demand forecasting. Participants will explore how neural networks learn from demand data, how they compare to traditional regression-based approaches, and where they truly add value—or introduce risk—in forecasting decisions. Through guided exercises using Python, attendees will gain practical experience building and interpreting a simple machine learning –based forecast. The workshop also examines how Large Language Models (LLMs) fit into the forecasting ecosystem as tools that support data preparation, code refinement, and analysis. Attendees will leave with a grounded understanding of how to apply machine learning responsibly in real-world forecasting environments.

Outline

1. AI & Machine Learning in Demand Forecasting: Setting the Context

  • What AI means in a forecasting environment and what it doesn’t
  • How machine learning fits within the broader AI landscape
  • Types of analytics and where machine learning adds real value
  • Where neural networks and LLMs fit into modern forecasting workflows

2. Neural Networks for Demand Forecasting

  • Neural networks vs. traditional regression:
    • Quick regression refresher
    • Key similarities, differences, and tradeoffs
  • Forecasting quantities (sales, demand) vs. events (yes/no, spikes, launches)
  • How neural networks work—explained intuitively for planners
  • When neural networks improve forecasts and when they can mislead

3. Python Foundations for Machine Learning (Hands-On)

  • Why Python is widely used for forecasting and analytics
  • Python fundamentals planners actually need (no heavy coding)
  • Hands-on exercises:
    • Writing simple programs
    • Creating and using simple functions

4. Building a Machine Learning Forecast (Hands-On)

  • Preparing data for a neural network model
  • Building a simple machine learning–based forecast using Python
  • Interpreting model outputs and understanding limitations
  • Common pitfalls: overfitting, false confidence, and explainability

5. Large Language Models (LLMs) in the Forecasting Workflow

  • What LLMs are—and what they are not in forecasting
  • Practical uses of LLMs to support machine learning workflows:
    • Data preparation and cleansing
    • Refining and explaining code
    • Accelerating analysis without replacing judgment

6. Putting It All Together: Applying Machine Learning Responsibly

  • Machine learning models as forecasting methods, not replacements for planners
  • Combining AI, machine learning, and human judgment
  • Where to start (and where not to) when applying ML in your organization
  • Key takeaways and next steps for real-world application
